This ISTE brought about the triggering question “What kind of programs can I introduce to my classroom for students with special needs (IEP or 504)?” I want to make sure that ALL my students receive the best education. When investigating resources, I stumbled upon a website which addressed technological resources that can be used by the teacher and will help students further their understanding in the arts.

Not only does this article provide resources for the classroom, but it also provides reasons why the visual arts can help those with disabilities. This article not only helped me feel reassured about the information I was providing my students with special needs but it also reminded me of the value of a visual arts education. According to this article, “Fine Arts experiences develop literacy, numeracy, and writing skills. Drawing and painting reinforce motor skills and can also be a way of learning shapes, contrasts, boundaries, spatial relationships, size and other math concepts”.
A resource that I found to be particularly interesting was “Destination Modern Art”. From the Museum of Modern Art, this interactive online website speaks to students about art — literally reading out the instructions, a help for students who do not read well. Students of all abilities can explore and use this site to learn about different interpretive ideas, practice vocabulary, learn how art is created, and much more. I think that this would be a fabulous resource in teaching English Language Learners and those still learning to read.

Carly, could you incorporate another resource, like those mentioned in class or by your group members. I see how MoMA provides resources for individuals of all abilities, that’s really encouraging. How would you use this in class? Would it be an individual, group or out of class activity?
Ideally I would want to align the subject we were investigating in class with something that would be found on the Destination Art program. Though watching this video may seem redundant, I am a firm believer that students who have concepts explained multiple times in several different mediums can better make connections to the subject matter.
