Tiki Coil

This project teaches students the second method of handbuilding. The method of coiling is taking ropes of soft clay and using the 4 S’s [Score, Slip, Smush, and Smooth] to join the coils into a solid wall. We will be creating a cylinder vessel that is about 5 inches in diameter and 9 inches in height.

Tiki Coil (PowerPoint)

This is the first lesson where I offered a bonus point for keeping their rough draft until the critique period. I did this primarily so that they could explain their artistic choices and how things changed while they were creating their tiki lantern.
